The "Brit problem" in France is not one of quantity, but of quality and recognition: the chaff gets translated whereas the wheat is ignored or arrives too late. Let me take this example: back in the Sixties, publisher Le Masque (the only one at the time specializing in traditional mysteries) heavily published the works of Colin Robertson, John Cassells or George Bellairs while butchering Sayers' "Five Red Herrings" and turning its nose up at the likes of Allingham, Hare or Crispin (the first and third finally found their way to Le Masque's catalog... in the 1980s) <br />Things haven't always been this way: British mysteries were quite popular in the years before WWII, with a literati like Paul Morand writing a glowing foreword to Sayers' "Lord Peter Views The Body". Readers after the war, on the other hand, wanted something grittier and less intellectual - and publishers were more than happy to oblige.Xavierhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/05702919450638993709noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4953280070115140001.post-83395197386249655112011-10-05T16:48:05.591+02:002011-10-05T16:48:05.591+02:00I'm stunned. Being an ignorant unilingual reader (though I could probably stumble through German books with the aid of a dictionary) I had no idea of the dearth of English translated British mystery authors in your country. Is this more a case of cultural bias rather than "discerning" publishing? If French readers don't know it exists will they seek it out in the original English anyway? So many questions to ponder.J F Norrishttps://www.blogger.com/profile/06473487417479127354noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4953280070115140001.post-66306658020286758922011-10-04T22:53:50.662+02:002011-10-04T22:53:50.662+02:00Xavier, un excellent article.
